Introduce about The Original Pancake House

The Original Pancake House was founded in Portland, Oregon in 1953 by Les Highet and Erma Hueneke. Drawing upon their many years of experience in the culinary field, and their extensive working knowledge of authentic national and ethnic pancake recipes they were able to offer without compromise this unique and original menu which has gained national acclaim. The Original Pancake House is a second and third generation family business, which takes great pride in maintaining the high standards that make our food so outstanding. We now have over one hundred franchises from coast to coast, which have won local and national acclaim. Our recipes demand only the very finest of ingredients, such as 93 score butter, pure 36% whipping cream, fresh grade AA eggs, hard wheat unbleached flour, and our own recipe sourdough starter. Our batters and sauces are made fresh in each restaurant’s kitchen.

  1. … the OPH here in Canada tastes like the pancakes , waffles and omelettes are freshly defrosted from the freezer…luckily each table is equipped with a blood sugar meter in case you order the pure artificial maple flavoured sugar …your OPH on the video looks and sounds absolutely terrific…is there some way you can bring these wonderful quality dishes to Canada…

  2. I used to go to the Original Pankake House in Southfield Michigan in 1980 ish for the Apple Pancake. It was a long wait of 25 minutes to cook but the waitress Lori was worth in. I will have to cook one up soon.

  3. For as long as I can remember this place has been at the east end of The Ross Island Bridge on S.E. Powell …. am I remembering correctly? That would have been from around 1960 on. The very BEST pancakes I have ever eaten!! So glad that it's still in Portland.

  4. The original location on Barbur Boulevard in Portland is unique — a far cry from those dreadful, cookie-cutter, suburban strip mall designs used for most locations.

  5. Best buttermilk pancakes on planet Earth. Nothing else compares or even comes close. Been trying to duplicate their unique 'yeasty' flavor for years to no avail.

  6. IN 1981 when I was 16 years old, I was a pancake mixer at the Original Pancake House at the 1st location on Barbur Blvd in Portland, OR. At 4 am, I had to start by cracking around 1200 eggs by hand, stir all the different batters in a huge round stainless steel bowl with a big whip and make all the crepe fillings and much more! I got paid $8 an hour. For a 15 year old, it wasn't too bad. The batter line up was: German, Swedish, Buttermilk, Potatos, & the Crepe fillings.

Ron Highet which was Les's son, he worked all day in the kitchen with us poaching eggs and I remember him getting mad and being irritated when he saw broken egg shells in the batters or the egg bowls that he was using for omelettes……hahahahaha!!!

The restaurant was on the 1st floor and Les Highet lived upstairs and every morning he would come down around 10am with his hunchback and his cane and sits at his own table drinks his warm milk and a bowl oatmeal and then goes backup stairs and you don't see him again until the next day. But one Sunday, he never showed in the morning. Come to find out, he had passed the night before. I believe this was around 1983 or 84. I remember all the Apple Pancakes being thrown away in the trash if no one orders it because it takes around 30 minutes to cook it.

What a memory! I'm 51 now and I've visited there 2 years ago and the rumor is that some of the waitress and the cooks are already dead. It was really sad to hear that. I live in LA now and we go down to Original Pancake House on Redondo Beach around once a month. The Dutch Baby is awesome!!
